European Parliament - Room PHS 7C50

PRESENTATION
The conference is meant to broaden support for the initiative to appoint an EU Women's Envoy. Several EU Envoys are active and effective. They are mainly responsible for a specific region. The EU Women's Envoy should be responsible for the coherence of policy and action in the realization of the Millennium Development Goals.
Although the European Parliament has recently declared its support for the initiative, more pressure is necessary to convince the Council of Ministers and the European Commission that the European Union needs to step up its efforts to promote gender equality and women's rights. Cooperation with organisations in the field of gender equality, development cooperation and human rights is crucial in building broad public and political support for the EU Women's Envoy.
The conference should furthermore define the tasks of the EU Women's Envoy. Which role can she play in making European gender policy more coherent and effective? By improving EU guidelines on women in development cooperation, or by playing a leading role in drafting a European action plan for the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security?
