The Jean Monnet Action was launched as an autonomous Commission initiative on the basis of a Commission Communication adopted on 28 June 1989. It has since grown into a Community programme included in the Lifelong Learning Programme adopted on 15 November 2006. Constituting a global network of excellence in the study of the European integration process, Jean Monnet professors are now active in 62 countries on the five continents, reaching a quarter million students every year.

This year's Jean Monnet conference will bring together 450 leading policy-makers, renowned academics and civil society representatives from all over the world to foster the global debate on the European Union in a variety of fields. The conclusions of the conference will be formally transmitted to the EU institutions and will result in a book published by the European Commission.

  • Jean Monnet Conferences aim to accompany the decision-making process and allow makers to benefit from academic reflection, to promote the interaction between the academic community, policy-makers and civil society, and to stimulate new thinking on a variety of policy issues;
  • Jean Monnet Thematic Groups are composed of a selected number of expert Jean Monnet professors and other high-level intellectuals to discuss a particular topic of political interest with European Commission officials and Members of the European Parliament;
  • Jean Monnet policy support on Intercultural Dialogue. The Jean Monnet Unit has been actively assisting the work of the “High-Level Advisory Group on the Dialogue between Peoples and Cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean Area” that was established by President Prodi (2003).

Europese Commissie (EC)
