Blog: The Jewish Community in Europe Needs Our Solidarity

I went today, together with First Vice-President Frans Timmermans and Commissioner Pierre Moscovici, to the European Jewish Association to light a candle and to pay my respects to the memory of the victims of the French terror attacks.

I was particularly touched by the speech of Mr Moche Bitton, the father of Sarah Bitton, who survived the Hypercacher attack after spending five horrific hours hidden in the freezer room, fearing for her life and for that of her 11 month-old baby.

I prayed for those who lost their lives in Paris, for their friends and families, but also for those who survived, like Sarah and her baby boy.

There is no place for hatred, for racism or for antisemitism in Europe. The Jewish community in Europe, now more than ever, needs and deserves our solidarity.
