Jennifer Baker is joined by Marjory van den Broeke, spokeswoman for the European Parliament, to discuss some of the most pressing issues on MEPs’ table this week. On Tuesday, MEPs will discuss the delicate issue of gun control and how to best prevent weapons from falling into wrong hands and ensure a solid cross-border tracking of arms. The AGRI Committee will cast its vote on a draft legislation to help prevent outbreaks of transmissible animal diseases such as avian flu or African swine fever. On Thursday, two big items will be on parliamentarians’ agenda. On the one hand, the trade relations with Tunisia, MEPs will cast their votes on emergency measures to temporarily raise the amount of olive oil that can be imported duty-free from Tunisia and will further discuss the opening of negotiations on an EU-Tunisia FTA. Still on Thursday, MEPs will grill the Commission and some tobacco industry representatives on means to put a definite end to cigarette smuggling. Finally, Ukraine Week kicks off this week and aims at celebrating democracy across Europe.
