Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy will co hoste a debate on aviation emissions in the aftermath of the Paris climate conference.
In the run-up to Paris agreement, the European Parliament commissioned a study on emission reduction targets for international aviation. Aviation is currently responsible for an estimated 5% of global warming. Without a change in the current projections, its emissions will increase more than 4 times, to account for 22% of global emissions in 2050, greatly undermining the ambition of the Paris Agreement. As emissions from international aviation are excluded from national targets, the UN aviation agency ICAO was assigned the responsibility to regulate them in 1997.
ICAO has promised to agree at its 2016 triennial Assembly later this year on the details of a 2020 global offsetting scheme. Where does that leave Europe, the aviation ETS and its 2030 climate ambition? What additional measures are needed?
