COP24 is the informal name for the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The key objective of COP24 is to adopt the implementation guidelines of the Paris Climate Change Agreement.
The organisation of side events in the EU Pavilion contributes to showcase the EU progress in implementing actions to achieve the climate goals agreed upon in Paris.
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides scientific and technical advice for the development and implementation of EU policies.
JRC scientists and experts co-lead side events and engage in panel discussions to contribute to the scientific and technical discussions on climate action.

Global Energy Transition - Political, Societal and Technology Options
10:30 - 14:00, EU Pavilion, Brussels Room
-
-This event will bring together experts to discuss new findings on the potential and ongoing contribution of solar photovoltaics to deliver the Paris Agreement in Europe and worldwide.
Decarbonisation of our energy supply is an important component to realise the Paris Agreement and photovoltaics (PV) is a key technology option to shift to a decarbonised energy supply and can be deployed in a modular way almost everywhere on this planet.

-
-This event aims at presenting the results of two studies on REDD+ carried out by the JRC for DG CLIMA and trigger the needed policy-related discussion.
The two projects are:
ROADLESS-FOR on global map of roadless areas in tropical forests based on best available spatial data and satellite images; and the
REDDFIT project on the assessment of major public, institutional and private flows of direct and indirect REDD+ finance to a number of recipient countries.

Land use and forestry in the Paris Agreement: from science to policy implementation
16:30 - 20:00, EU Pavilion, Brussels Room
-
-Achieving the long-term temperature goal of the Paris Agreement requires a key contribution from forest mitigation.
This side event wants to tackle a crucial challenge associated with realising this mitigation potential: achieving more confidence in numbers and scientific studies.
To this regard, the recent EU’s approach to forest accounting will be presented and discussed as well as the results of a new approach for estimating forest fluxes within the EDGAR global GHG dataset.

Global Covenant of Mayors
09:30 - 18:00, EU Pavilion, Brussels Room
-
-This year, the GCoM day provides a platform to follow-up on the ambition that Covenant cities have set for themselves, including in the context of the Global Climate Action Summit and on the One Planet Charter.
It will also be a forum to move beyond commitment, allowing leading Covenant cities to showcase their achievements and inspire others.
It will in particular address innovative approaches - institutional, technological, or natural - to accelerate the transition to low-carbon and climate resilience, and will provide a space to demonstrate quantified progress of Covenant cities in the fight against climate change.
