How transparent are the EU institutions? A discussion with the European Ombudsman, Brussel - Hoofdinhoud

For some time now, Europe has been grappling with intense internal pressures as well as complex external dilemmas. To help the EU move beyond these challenges and reflect on the opportunities that lie ahead, CEPS has launched a new series of events on the Future of Europe. This series invites politicians and high-level policymakers to discuss desirable objectives and possible actions across several key policy areas.

At the fourth meeting in this series, on May 22nd, CEPS has invited Emily O'Reilly, the European Ombudsman, to join us for a discussion on the (in)transparency of the EU institutions. Central to this issue are the Council's decision-making procedures (often described as opaque and secretive), as well as the Commission's method of assigning and handling its top jobs. What is the state of the EU’s legislative transparency? How accountable are EU actors to the people they serve? What can the EU institutions do to foster trust in the European Union among its citizens? What implications do institutional malpractices have for the democratic quality of the EU? These and other questions will inform this important debate.
