College focuses on the Commission Work Programme for 2019 and discusses developments in Romania, FYROM and trade policy
2019 Commission Work Programme
Today's College meeting started with a presentation by First Vice-President Frans Timmermans i on the preparation of the Commission Work Programme for 2019. This included a particular focus on the annual meeting between the Commission and the Conference of the Committee Chairs of the European Parliament to prepare and discuss priorities and to take stock of the work in progress.
President Juncker holds the delivery on the Commission's promises dear, and also said it on the occasion of his 2018 State of the Union Address, when he called on all decision-makers to work closely together over the next months and deliver jointly on the adoption and implementation of the 291 still pending proposals the Commission has made since 2014.
Rule of law in Romania
First Vice President Timmermans briefed the College on the state of play of the rule of law in Romania ahead of the plenary debate in the European Parliament tomorrow morning.
former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia referendum
Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn briefly presented the state of play following Sunday's consultative referendum held in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on the "Prespes Agreement" which was concluded in June with Greece on the name issue.
Trade
Commissioner for trade Cecilia Malmström took the opportunity to update the College on recent developments in trade policy, notably on the state of play of the EU-US discussions to implement the Joint Statement agreed by Presidents Juncker and Trump in July, and on the agreement reached by the United States, Canada and Mexico to update the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Tsunami in Indonesia
The College heard Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides on the emergency aid and support provided by the Commission to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Indonesia on Friday. The Commission already released an initial 1.5 million euros in emergency humanitarian assistance, which will help provide essential supplies like food, water, shelter and medication.
