Met dank overgenomen van Oostenrijks voorzitterschap Europese Unie 2e helft 2018 (Oostenrijks Voorzitterschap) i, gepubliceerd op dinsdag 13 november 2018, 11:00.

On 8 and 9 November 2018 a conference on the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office i took place under the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the Federal Ministry of Constitutional Affairs, Reforms, Deregulation and Justice. The legal basis for the establishment - the Council regulation implementing enhanced cooperation on the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (“the EPPO”) - was adopted on 12 October 2017 by the Council of the European Union.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office will be responsible for the criminal prosecution of offences against the European Union’s financial interests and shall be operational at the start of 2021 at the earliest. Until then numerous measures have to be implemented at EU i as well as member‑state level. The conference, which was organised in close cooperation with the European Commission and was supported by it, has made a major contribution in that respect.

It is a declared goal of the European Commission, the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the conference participants to turn the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office into a success.
