Organised by the European Commission Department for Agriculture and Rural Development the workshop follows on from a workshop (20-21 September 2018) on best practices for the effective integration of primary producers in the bioeconomy value chains.

The objective of the workshop is to improve knowledge on

  • key drivers and potential of cooperation structures of primary producers in streamlining the Bioeconomy also from the point of view of adaptation to climate change and decarbonisation
  • identify ways of promoting cooperation for the purposes of the Bioeconomy, specifically in EU countries where cooperation is still under-developed

Key issues to be covered

  • what are the main benefits of being part of a cooperation structure compared to acting alone
  • how has the cooperative concept/ structure evolved over time
  • what are the main challenges the cooperative faces now in terms of climate change
  • what is the role of your cooperative in giving technical directions to associated farmers
  • what is the real possibility to re-invest positive profits into climate/environmental friendly operations
  • what types of investments the cooperative is making in capacity building and human resources development
  • which link would the cooperative envisage with the local community for raising awareness and creating appropriate incentives
  • what are the opportunities for the cooperative in terms of Bioeconomy value streams
  • how is the concept of circular and sustainable Bioeconomy integrated in the business model of the cooperative
  • how R&I or other knowledge needs are satisfied
  • what is the future vision of the cooperatives about optimization of biomass harvesting, and innovative end use of biomass
  • what is the role of EU funding to help cooperatives in the process of mainstreaming the Bioeconomy by creating new value chains or integrating into existing ones

The outcome of the workshop will serve as a basis for future activities on promoting the development of the Bioeconomy, feeding into the preparation of the future CAP Strategic Plans in order to guarantee an effective support for the deployment of Bioeconomy projects.

Europese Commissie (EC)

Deze instelling van de Europese Unie kan worden beschouwd als het 'dagelijks bestuur' van de EU. De leden van de Europese Commissie worden 'Eurocommissarissen i' genoemd. Elke Eurocommissaris is verantwoordelijk voor één of meerdere beleidsgebieden. Momenteel zijn er 26 Eurocommissarissen. In principe is er voor iedere lidstaat één. Samen vormen zij het college van Eurocommissarissen. De Eurocommissarissen moeten het belang van de Europese Unie als geheel behartigen, niet dat van hun eigen land.

De Europese Commissie mag als enige EU-instelling wetsvoorstellen indienen; zij heeft het zogenaamde recht van initatief. Daarnaast controleert de Commissie of de Europese wetgeving juist wordt toegepast in de lidstaten, onderhandelt zij in internationale organisaties als de Wereldhandelsorganisatie (WTO) i over de handel van de Unie met het 'buitenland' en is zij verantwoordelijk voor het beheer van de Europese begroting van ongeveer 140 miljard euro per jaar.
