Agenda highlights

The 14th Asia and Europe Foreign Ministers' Meeting will take place in Madrid, Spain on 15 and 16 December.

The event will bring together foreign affairs ministers from European and Asian countries, under the theme "Asia and Europe: together for effective multilateralism".

The meeting will be chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

Foreign ministers will exchange views on how to strengthen cooperation on a wide range of areas, focusing on these central themes:

  • global issues: the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate change, and marine litter;
  • regional issues and security challenges: terrorism, maritime security and cyber and information and communication technology;
  • gender equality and empowerment: peace, security and sustainable development issues;
  • sustainable connectivity

A press conference will be held on the 16 December at the end of the meeting (at around 15:45).

About the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)

The Asia-Europe Meeting is a forum for dialogue and cooperation between Europe and Asia. It was established in 1996 and aims to strengthen the relationship between the two continents.

ASEM brings together 53 partners, including 51 European countries and Asian countries, the EU, and the ASEAN Secretariat.

The ASEM summit is organised every two years, in Asia and in Europe alternatively, to set out the priorities of the partnership. Ministerial meetings are organised in between the ASEM summits, including at one meeting of Foreign Affairs ministers.
