A special event on Health and Climate Change, organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) on January 30th, will launch a report highlighting the Health co-benefits from climate policy implementation in China. It will also brief participants on WHO’s upcoming 2020 Global Conference on Health and Climate Change.

1.Launch of IISD report highlighting the Health co-benefits from NDC implementation in China

Over the past few years, China has shown a strong determination to shift to a low-carbon economy through a series of initiatives and commitments. This new report by IISD, and with the support of WHO, summarizes the policy efforts the country is undertaking to meet its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets to the Paris Agreement, and the related expected health co-benefits from these policies.

The report also compares public budget allocations to health and climate change-related measures and the allocation of fossil fuel subsidies in China.

2.Briefing on the 2020 Global Conference on Health and Climate Change

This Global Conference, due to take place in Glasgow at the margin of the COP26 UN climate conference, will be a gathering organized by the World Health Organization(convening its 4th Global Conference on Health and Climate) and by the Global Climate and Health Alliance (convening its 8th Global Climate and Health Summit), in close collaboration with the Glasgow Caledonian University and its Centre for Climate Justice, and with the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change.

The conference will convene a range of stakeholders and policymakers working towards Healthy NDCs -national climate plans that are compatible with achieving the Paris Agreement targets and incorporate public health considerations. In doing so, the conference will convene a group of countries with Healthy and ambitious NDCs at COP26 and will help to drive ambitious, health- and justice-focused climate action.
