Read-out of the meeting between European Commission President von der Leyen, the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in her capacity as rotating Presidency of the Council, 21 September - Hoofdinhoud

Today, President von der Leyen discussed via videoconference with the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli i, and Chancellor Angela Merkel i for the Presidency of the Council of the EU i the next steps regarding the adoption of the next Multiannual Financial Framework and the NextGenerationEU recovery plan.

The three Presidents prepared the intensive political negotiations that lie ahead, to pave the way for the EU budget and recovery support to be in place by 1 January 2021. This will require strong coordination between the EU institutions as well as ratification of the key elements according to each Member States' constitutional provisions.

President Sassoli presented the main points of interest for the European Parliament in the discussions.

The three Presidents reaffirmed their strong commitment to reaching an agreement swiftly. They agreed to stay in close contact throughout the coming weeks and months.

President von der Leyen expressed her intention to reconvene a further meeting under article 324 of the Treaty, as appropriate, as soon as a key stage in the discussions has been reached.
