Statement by President von der Leyen on additional doses of BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine - Hoofdinhoud

Nous avons beaucoup de projets pour l'année 2021. Et c'est vrai en particulier pour la reconstruction économique. Mais tout cela présuppose que nous allons réussir à vaincre la pandémie. Ce qui veut dire en premier lieu: nous devons vacciner un maximum d'Européennes et d'Européens, le plus rapidement possible. And that is why I am pleased about a very positive development today, which I would like to share with you.

As you know, we have right now access to 300 million doses of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine. Now the good news is: We now have agreed with BioNTech-Pfizer to extend this contract. With the new agreement, we could purchase a total of up to an additional 300 million doses of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine - in other words, this will allow us to double the amount of doses of BioNTech-Pfizer.

And I am particularly pleased that 75 million doses of this order will already be available as of quarter two onwards. The rest would then be delivered in the third and in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The advantage of this good news is: We have already a contract - so no lengthy negotiations anymore. It is a proven vaccine - so the whole procedure of authorisation is done. The Member States know it - so they know how to handle it, they know the logistics behind it. And therefore this brings certainty for the planning and it creates an additional momentum for vaccinations throughout Europe and for the neighbourhood.

You know already another piece of good news: On Wednesday, the Commission granted market authorisation for a second vaccine - it is Moderna. This means, with these two authorised vaccines, we have already secured an amount of doses that we need to vaccinate 380 million Europeans. And this is more than 80% of the European population. And other vaccines will follow in the coming weeks and months.

Und es bleibt daher dabei: Europa wird mehr als genügend Impfstoff haben in einem verlässlichen Zeitrahmen. Und das zeigt eben auch, dass der Weg, den wir gemeinsam in Europa eingeschlagen haben, der richtige Weg ist. Wir wollen das gemeinsam machen, wir haben die gemeinsame Marktmacht. Das beweist sich heute auch wieder. Wir haben gemeinsam ein breites Portfolio an Impfstoffen angelegt, das war auch richtig, denn wer wusste schon im Sommer welcher Impfstoff zum Schluss das Rennen macht. Wir brauchen ein breites Portfolio. Wir haben von Anfang an als Europäische Kommission investiert in den Ausbau der Kapazitäten. Das zeigt sich auch heute, wie wichtig das ist. Und wir sind jetzt gemeinsam, mit 27 Mitgliedstaaten, dabei diesen Impfprozess voranzutreiben.

Denn richtig ist auch - und wir wissen das alle - wir sind alle nur sicher, wenn alle in Europa auch Zugang zum Impfstoff haben und unsere Nachbarschaft auch. Kein Land in Europa kann ohne die anderen. Wir haben eine große Wertegemeinschaft in Europa, wir haben einen gemeinsamen Markt in Europa und wir kommen aus dieser tiefen Gesundheits- und Wirtschaftskrise nur gemeinsam heraus. Wir sind stärker, wenn wir zusammenhalten.
