The European Commission appoints a new Head of Representation in Slovakia - Hoofdinhoud

Today, Vladimír Šucha has been appointed as Head of the European Commission's Representation in Bratislava and will take office on 1 January 2022. In this function, he will act as the official representative of the European Commission in Slovakia under the political authority of President Ursula von der Leyen i.

Mr Šucha, a Slovak national, is endowed with robust experience in managing senior teams and is also well versed in a range of EU policies. Combined with his many years of involvement in European and Slovakian diplomacy, his background makes him particularly suitable to effectively manage key political relations as well as communication and strategic coordination related tasks as Head of Representation.

Since early 2021, Vladimír Šucha has been a Senior Policy Adviser at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization i (UNESCO), where he is primarily focused on developing a global system for using the scientific knowledge to support the management of societal changes. He has been working for the European Commission for 15 years, including as Hors Classe Adviser in the Directorate-General for Education and Culture (EAC) in 2020, Director-General of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) from 2014 until 2019 and Director in DG EAC from 2006 until 2012.

Before joining the Commission in 2006, Mr Šucha was Director of the Slovak Research and Development Agency, Principal Advisor for European Affairs to the Slovak Minister of Research and Education and also worked as a diplomat at the Slovak Permanent Representation to the EU during the Slovak EU membership negotiations.

Background

The Commission maintains Representations in all capitals of EU Member States, and Regional Office in Barcelona, Bonn, Marseille, Milan, Munich and Wroclaw. The Representations are the Commission's eyes, ears and voice on the ground in EU Member States. They interact with national authorities, stakeholders and citizens, and inform the media and the public about EU policies. Heads of Representations are appointed by the President of the European Commission and are her political representatives in the Member State to which they are posted.
