The European Union welcomes Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's announcement that he will be a candidate for reelection for a second term as Secretary-General of the United Nations.

This is very good news for the United Nations and for the international community which he has served tirelessly, and which have benefitted from the important efforts of the Secretary-General.

Over these past five years, the European Union and the United Nations under the leadership of the Secretary-General, have established an outstanding working relationship.

During a period of great turmoil on many fronts, Mr. Ban Ki-moon has ensured a steady and determined leadership.

With this declaration, the European Union renews its commitment to supporting the UN in responding to the challenges it faces across the world.
