Implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights: our shared responsibility
Justice Ministers from the 47 Council of Europe member states will meet in Brussels on 26 and 27 March to discuss how best to make sure that judgments from the European Court of Human Rights are quickly and effectively put into practice.
The event, part of the on-going Belgian chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers, will be the fourth in a series of high-level conferences on reform of the ECHR system, following on from those held in Interlaken (2010), İzmir (2011) and Brighton (2012).
The Brussels conference is expected to result in a political declaration reaffirming support for the ECHR system, together with an action plan setting out measures to be taken within the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights and the 47 member states to improve the execution of the court’s judgments.

Bij het Europees Hof voor de Rechten van de Mens kunnen individuen, groepen, organisaties en landen een klacht indienen tegen een lidstaat, door een beroep te doen op het Europees Verdrag tot Bescherming van de Rechten van de Mens i (EVRM). Het Europees Hof van de Rechten van de Mens is geen instelling van de Europese Unie maar van de Raad van Europa i, waar bijna 50 landen bij zijn aangesloten.
Verzoekschriften kunnen bijvoorbeeld betrekking hebben op kwesties als opsluiting van psychiatrische patiënten, rechten van gevangenen, het afluisteren van telefoongesprekken, LGTBQ+-rechten, persvrijheid, lijfstraffen, voogdij over kinderen, gezinshereniging en uitzettingskwesties. De uitspraken van het Hof zijn definitief (er is geen hoger beroep mogelijk) en bindend voor de betrokken staten.
