Third European Development Days event, Strasbourg (EDD)

European Development Days (EDD) is one of the major events on the international development calendar taking place at a strategically important time for Europeans and their partners, two months after the General Assembly of the United Nations and some weeks ahead of the Doha Conference on financing for development and in the middle of a number of global crises.

This 3rd EDD event will focus on the local dimension of development and in particular on the role of local authorities.

Other current development issues will be the focus of discussion including the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, the food crisis, climate change and the impact of media on development (following on from the Media and Development Forum which took place in Ouagadougou in September : http://media-dev.eu)

The consequences of the financial crisis for development will be one of the major points for reflection and proposals.

Achtergrond

Following on from 2006 (main theme : governance) and 2007 (main theme : climate change) EDD has become a high level fixture in European and international calendars. Each year there are up to 3000 participants from all continents representing some 1200 organisations from the development family.

EDD gives everyone – public administrations, parliaments, local authorities, civil society, international organisations, academics, development agencies, media and the private sector - a natural platform for debate, the opportunity to tackle major difficulties in development cooperation and the possibility of launching new initiatives.

More than a 'not to be missed' institutional rendez-vous, EDD also seeks to enhance public awareness of cooperation and development issues. In this framework, a series of events open to the general public will be organised including art exhibitions, festivals, concerts, workshops etc.

The European Union is the biggest donor of development aid, accounting for 56% of the global amount which came to €47,6 billion in 2007. This will grow to €66 billion in 2010 with a view to reaching €90 billion in 2015. The EU is also the main trading partner for developing countries.

Europese Commissie (EC)
