The European Commission and the Vietnamese authorities are jointly organising an ASEM Seminar "Preserving and promoting the diversity of cultural expressions: sharing Asian and European experiences", which takes place in Hanoi, Vietnam on 15-16 December 2008. The aim of this event is to gather reflections on how to preserve and promote the diversity of cultural expressions, while sharing the rich Asian and European experiences in this field.

The Seminar will be opened by Mr. Sean Doyle, Head of the European Commission (EC) Delegation in Vietnam as well as Mr. TS Hoà ng Tu?n ANH, Minister, Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST). It will bring together high-profile and influential personalities from both Europe and Asia and will include the presence of a certain number of senior national officials, as well as both diplomats and representatives of Asian and European cultural sectors.

This meeting will aim in particular at exchanging experiences and points of view on questions related to the diversity of cultural expressions, including reflections on the importance of the 2005 UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions on this subject. It will be an open platform for discussions between senior officials, decision-makers and representatives of civil society active in the field of culture, from both Europe and Asia.

The adoption in 2005 of the UNESCO Convention has, for the first time in history, established a set of principles, rights and obligations which can be considered as a cultural pillar for global governance. So far 93 countries from around the world, as well as the European Community, have ratified this instrument. This is an unprecedented development in international relations. Many ratifications of the UNESCO Convention already originate from both Europe and Asia, and in particular South-East Asia. The Socialist Republic of Vietnam deposited its instrument of ratification with the UNESCO Director-General on 7 August 2007.
