Czech Prime Minister and EU Council President Jan Fischer i and his Italian counterpart, Silvio Berlusconi i, discussed the preparation of the European Council, to be held in Brussels on 18 and 19 June, in a phone conversation today.

"The Italian Prime Minister fully acknowledged the willingness of the Czech Republic to complete the planned agenda of its Presidency", stated Jan Fischer.

In light of the numerous impacts of the financial and economic crisis, the discussion also addressed the EU policy against illegal migration and the environment. The Prime Ministers agreed that the ratification process of the Lisbon Treaty must be completed in all EU Member States.

Silvio Berlusconi revisited his recent statements on the Czech Prime Minister, reassuring Mr Fischer that they were misunderstood by the media and that he had "never intended to criticise him in any negative way"; moreover, Mr Berlusconi affirmed his personal support at the June European Council meeting.

The Italian Prime Minister also welcomed Jan Fischer's suggestion that the two politicians should communicate in a less formal manner in the future.
