European Development Days, Warschau - Hoofdinhoud

The 6th edition of European Development Days (EDDs) will take place on 15-16 December 2011 in Warsaw. It will be a continuation of this regular event which has been organised since 2006 in the second half of the year by the Presidency in cooperation with the European Commission.

The main theme of this year's European development days will be the concept of development and democracy which, given recent events in Belarus, North Africa, Syria and Sudan, is of particular topical significance.

Several themed events are planned in the framework of the EDDs.

The principle group of European development days guests will be representatives of European institutions and organisations involved in development policy, who are also jointly responsible for preparation of the event. Approximately 1,000 guests, including heads of state, prime ministers, ministers and Noble Prize winners are expected.

The Polish President, Bronislaw Komorowski, and Commission President Jose-Manuel Barroso will deliver a keynote speech at the opening of the two-day conference. They are expected to be joined by Radoslaw Sikorski, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Poland, and Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament.

Andris Piebalgs, European Commissioner for Development, will deliver a speech on the high level panel on modernising European development policy.

Thanks to the diversity of the participants and the event's informal nature, European development days is a forum which inspires debate on the future of EU development policy and at the same time ensures greater perception of EU external aid amongst the European public.
