On Tuesday, President Komorowski took part in the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg.

‘Europeans have learned that cooperation and integration allow a better future to be built beyond the borders constituting the difficult legacy of history,’ the President stressed in the European Parliament. ‘We want a dynamic and courageous, open and supportive EU,’ said Bronislaw Komorowski to MEPs.

‘We in Poland deeply believe in Europe and we want a dynamic and courageous, open and supportive European Union, we want a Union that will ensure Europe's role in keeping with size of its civilization, a European Union that will protect the vitality of this civilization - the civilization of Europe. We want a Union that will give all of its peoples safety, which will be an apt response to the needs and concerns of its citizens,’ said the President.

‘I know that such a Union is possible, we want to build such a Union together with the other nations of Europe,’ he noted.

‘Today, the Council of the European Union is chaired by Poland - dynamic, full of faith in the success of the European project, active in external relations and committed to strengthening the achievements of European integration,’ assured Bronislaw Komorowski.

Bronislaw Komorowski said that EU nations have made a great and difficult achievement, namely carried out a major enlargement. ‘The integration of the East and West of the continent was possible and is still progressing through the coordinated efforts of both sides of the border once dividing Europe,’ he said.

In the President’s opinion, the great enlargement in the years 2004-2007 required tremendous work of all governments, parliaments, NGOs and other entities involved. ‘The countries of Central and Eastern Europe in preparation for membership underwent major internal changes. In our part of Europe, here in Poland, we had to travel at high speed the road from totalitarianism and centrally planned economies to democracy and free markets,’ he said.

‘We have learned that courage in making changes simply pays off,’ the President said. He added that the Polish transformation was the work of the Poles themselves, but the direction was charted by a desire to connect with a unifying Europe. ‘And Europe really helped us do that. It was the solidarity of that Europe for which history after 1945 was gracious, and solidarity with the part that fell victim to the judgements of history,’ he said. ‘Poles will remember that support and solidarity,’ assured the President.

‘The Polish Presidency i falls on hard times for Europe,’ Bronislaw Komorowski believes, ‘for its population and its economy: we are facing tougher challenges than ever before in recent years. According to the President, the crisis is not only a threat; it is also an opportunity to give impetus to the deepening of integration. ‘More of Europe is our response to the crisis,’ said Bronislaw Komorowski.

He assured that the Polish Presidency will make every effort to ensure that in the near future the reform of economic governance in the EU is finalised. ‘I would like to thank the European Parliament for their outstanding commitment and valuable contribution to the improvement of solutions that make up the so-called “six-pac ik”, which aims to strengthen the EU's Stability and Growth Pact i and the maintenance of public finances in EU Member States,’ he stressed.
