European Committee of the Regions,
Energy, environment and climate,
The increasing demands from a growing global population for food, feed, bioenergy, timber, and other commodities are the main drivers of deforestation. In our increasingly interconnected and globalised world, our rate of consumption, individually and locally, has an impact at the other side of the globe. A forest area measuring 1.3 million km2 was lost between 1990 and 2016. This is the equivalent of 800 football fields of forest being lost by the hour, every day of the year!
The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is currently drafting an opinion on ‘Stepping up EU action to protect and restore the world’s forests’. The rapporteur of the opinion, Marco Dus (IT/PES), Member of Vittorio Veneto Municipal Council, Province of Treviso, together with his expert Lisa Pizzol, would be like to gather stakeholders’ views on this important matter.
