The rule of law is one of the common values that form the foundation of the EU. Strengthening the rule of law in the EU is one of the priorities of the EU’s future work, and it is also one of the key themes of the ongoing Finnish Presidency. Over the past few years, the European Court of Justice has issued several rulings on the rule of law, which will be the focus of analysis at the seminar.
Several experts will give speeches on the rule of law and related case law at the seminar. The speakers include top experts from administration, the judicial system and academia.

Van 1 juli tot en met 31 december 2019 vervulde Finland het voorzitterschap i van de Raad van de Europese Unie i. Finland volgde hiermee Roemenië i op. Finland was voor de tweede keer voorzitter van de Raad; de eerste keer was in juli t/m december 2006.
Finland was onderdeel van het zogenoemde trojka i met Roemenië en Kroatië i. De prioriteiten van het Fins voorzitterschap sloten aan bij de gemeenschappelijke doelen van deze trojka i. Die doelen waren onder meer gericht op het versterken van het vertrouwen van burgers in de EU, een toekomstgericht klimaatbeleid en het versterken van de rol van de EU op het wereldtoneel.
