This SSM research seminar will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Brussels, on Tuesday 17 December 2019 (14:00-18:00).

Focus of the seminar: Changing value chains and their impact on employment

Digital technologies and transition to carbon-neutral society are expected to have a profound impact on value chains, including on employment, working conditions and the size/width of these value chains. However, there is still little research on the significance of this phenomenon.

The aim of our next seminar will be to present the latest research on these trends, and discuss their implications for the EU.

Speakers and presentations

  • Astrid Krenz (University of Goettingen): Robots, Reshoring, and the Lot of Low-Skilled Workers
  • Theodora Stathoulia (Independent Expert): EU’s Key Strategic Value Chains into Global Value Chains (GVC) and the impact on employment: a critical approach to the European Digital Economy and Society Index on Human Capital combined with value chain players
  • John Bryson (University of Birmingham): Repatriation or Reshoring of Manufacturing to the U.S. and UK: Dynamics and Global Production Networks or from Here to There and Back Again
  • Filippo Bontadini (University of Sussex): Integration in Global Value Chains and Employment in Europe
  • Victor Stolzenburg (World Trade Organisation): Economic upgrading through global value chain participation: which policies increase the value added gains?

The programme of the seminar can be found below.

The SSM seminar series

SSM seminars are research seminars. Their aim is to provide a forum to discuss the theoretical, methodological and policy implications of the latest economic and social research. More specifically, SSM seminars aim to inform:

  • The economic and social analysis of the European Commission in general, and the Commission’s Employment and Social Developments in Europe review in particular.
  • The economic and social analysis of the European Commission’s stakeholders.
  • The economic and social policies of the European Commission and its stakeholders.

SSM seminars are primarily intended for:

  • Economists and analysts working in policy-making organisations;
  • Academic researchers;
  • Policy officers with an interest in economic and social analysis.

More information on previous SSM seminars can be found on this webpage.

Europese Commissie (EC)
