The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) launches the call for proposals for its first Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) The news: The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is taking a major step forward by launching the call for proposals for the first Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs). The call will be open until 27 August and the first two or three KICs selected by the end of January 2010. The background: The EIT aims to become a key driver of sustainable European growth and competitiveness through the stimulation of world-leading innovation. Its mission is to enhance the positive impact on the economy and society of Europe's great capacity for innovation. This will be achieved through new major concerted actions at European level and the first of these are the KICs. The KICs are innovative webs of excellence. These closely integrated partnerships will bring together higher education, technology, research, business and entrepreneurship in response to key societal challenges such as energy, climate change and the future information and communication society. They will drive effective new interactions between partners in terms of ideas, technology, culture, business and design models. They will create new business for existing industry, including SMEs, and for new endeavours alike. A strong component of KICs' innovation strategies will be to educate and develop entrepreneurial people working across traditional borders, sectors and disciplines. Europese Commissie (EC)
