Wednesday 25 March: International conference on sustainable development in Guinea-Bissau
An International conference in support of Guinea-Bissau will take place in Brussels on 25 March. The event will be co-hosted by the government of Guinea-Bissau, the EU and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The Brussels conference will bring together the international community and Guinea-Bissau to endorse the government's vision and long-term development strategy 2015-2025 and to pledge support to enable its implementation.
2015 is the European Year for Development. Against this background, the conference comes at a crucial juncture for Guinea-Bissau. After years of extreme fragility and political instability, the country turned a corner in 2014 with elections in May and the restoration of the constitutional order. The objective will be to sustain the positive momentum and ensure that the country moves away from fragility and towards sustainable development.

De Europese Unie (EU) is het belangrijkste samenwerkingsverband in Europa. De deelnemende landen hebben voor deze Unie een aantal organisaties opgericht waaraan zij een deel van hun eigen bevoegdheden hebben overgedragen. Dit zijn onder meer het Europees Parlement i, de Europese Commissie i, de Raad i en het Europese Hof van Justitie i.
Het 'United Nations Development Programme' (UNDP) is een onderdeel van de Verenigde Naties i dat de armoede in ontwikkelingslanden, specifiek in de minst ontwikkelde landen, wil aanpakken. UNDP geeft onder andere voorlichting en organiseert trainingen in ontwikkelingslanden.
UNDP is de organisatie achter de millenniumdoelstellingen. Deze doelstellingen die door een kleine 190 landen zijn erkend, hebben betrekking op de bestrijding van honger, ziekte, analfabetisme, milieuverontreiniging en de discriminatie van vrouwen. In september 2015 werden de duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelen (sustainable development goals) aangenomen, die de millenniumdoelen opvolgen. Streven is dat deze doelstellingen in 2030 zijn bereikt.
