Mr Manservisi brings more than thirty years of experience in the Commission to this job, including six years as Director-General of the department for Development and Relations with Africa, Caribbean, Pacific States (DG DEV) and four years leading the department for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME). He also served as Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey. Between 1991 and 1992 and between 1993 and 2000 he worked in the private offices of Vice-President Pandolfi and Commissioners Raniero Vanni d'Archirafi i and Mario Monti i, respectively. In 2000, Mr Manservisi joined the private office of President Romano Prodi i, first as a Deputy Head of Cabinet and then as a Head of Cabinet. Stefano Manservisi started his career in the private sector and worked in the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade before joining the European Commission in 1983.
Mr Manservisi also has an extensive teaching experience. He has been a visiting professor in the University of Bologna, University of Roma III and the College of Europe.
With approximately 3400 staff - in its Brussels headquarters and in EU i Delegations around the world - DG DEVCO i is in charge of formulating and implementing the European Union's development policy. The department also devises policies aimed at reducing poverty in the world, ensuring sustainable economic, social and environmental development, and promoting democracy, the rule of law, good governance and the respect of human rights.
