On 19 September policymakers and key stakeholders come together to have thorough discussions on how the new design of the electricity market should look like.

During the event, Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete and European Parliament’s Rapporteur Krišjānis Kariņš will present their views on the progress made on the Clean Energy Package electricity market proposals and the necessary steps ahead.

In the panel discussions, the debates will focus on three critical challenges of the future’s electricity market, providing different perspectives on the matter.

The first panel discussion highlights the (so far to a large extent unused) potential of digital solutions in providing a more efficient electricity market. This discussion is related to the public-private partnership initiative proposed by the Estonian Presidency.

In the second round of discussion, the panellists will focus on how to boost the integration of renewables to the market. The main question here is how to set incentives in a manner that would not distort the overall functioning of the electricity market.

In the final panel discussion, a lively debate on the functioning of the wholesale market and on how to ensure the security of supply is to be expected. Capacity mechanisms have been criticised as being a covert subsidy for fossil fuels, however, the question is should they rather be seen as an integral part of the market that aims to provide security of supply?

The debates will be summarised by Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete and Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič.

All of these discussions will provide a valuable input not only for the Energy ministers’ meeting the next day but for the negotiations throughout the Estonian Presidency and beyond.

Ests voorzitterschap Europese Unie 2e helft 2017
