The Committee on Petitions each year receives a considerable number of petitions referring to difficulties encountered by people with disabilities in the EU in various fields, such as access to employment, education systems or public transport facilities.
Following a prior public hearing on the topic held by the Committee on 19 October 2015, the upcoming hearing will focus on two specific aspects: i) the legal capacity of persons with disabilities and their right to vote, in the run-up to the European elections in May 2019, and ii) women and disabilities.
The hearing will present the possibility to exchange views with experts, including representatives of the Fundamental Rights Agency and the European Commission, on the role the Committee on Petitions can play in protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities, in the context of the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Deze parlementaire commissie i behandelt verzoekschriften i die zijn ingediend door inwoners van de Europese Unie. Het indienen van verzoekschriften bij het Europees Parlement is één van de grondrechten van Europese burgers (art. 227 van het Verdrag betreffende de werking van de EU). De commissie onderhoudt tevens de contacten van het parlement met de Europese Ombudsman i.
De commissie bestaat uit 35 leden. De commissieleden vergaderen regelmatig over ingediende verzoekschriften, waarbij ze deze op ontvankelijkheid beoordelen. Daarnaast handelt ze de verzoekschriften ook af.
Dit agentschap i verleent de instellingen van de Europese Unie i en de lidstaten i bijstand en expertise op het gebied van de grondrechten. Dit moet hen helpen om bij hun activiteiten de grondrechten volledig te eerbiedigen.
Het agentschap is een voortzetting van het Europees Waarnemingscentrum voor Racisme en Vreemdelingenhaat en is sinds 1 maart 2007 in de huidige vorm operationeel.
